Okidata Corporation was launched in 1972 by Oki Electric Industry, as a joint venture between Japan and the US. Their first product was a dot printer, the DP100. Following the burst of Japan’s bubble economy, Okidata Corporation was spun off as an independent company in 1995. The company’s brand name is Oki Printing Solutions.
The company is behind the LED (light emitting diode) technology. Unlike an ordinary laser printer, the image is formed by an array of diodes. Thereby fewer moving parts are needed. The first LED printer, OPP-6024, began to sell in 1987. In 1998 a color version was launched.
Today the company is still specializing in LED printers and dot matrix printers. They also sell digital monochrome printers, faxes and multifunction units.
